A letter from J. Holden – The power of music

A letter from J. Holden – The power of music

I am an unmarried woman and although I have had an interesting and adventurous life I have often been very lonely. We live in a world of couples so I have faced social exclusion but in the last few years my life has changed beyond measure. No! I have not met the man of my dreams but I have experienced the healing power of music. This power has been known since the dawn of civilisation. I am a member of two choirs. When we sing with others our breathing and heart beats co-ordinate and then we produce the happy hormone oxytocin. Some evenings I think that I am too tired but always I come away enlivened and happy. The friends I meet at choir say the same thing. Our choirs too have social events which enhance our lives.

I am, by the way 85 years old and am enjoying the happiest times of my life.
