Avoid those falling leaves: travel where the sun shines

Avoid those falling leaves: travel where the sun shines

As the autumn weather makes the rain pour and the trees barren, it’s time for one thing – a holiday. Indeed, there’s little better than lounging on a beach in the sweltering summer sun for a few more weeks, escaping that awkward season change into dreadful downpours and slushy streets.

So, where should you hitch a flight? Well, have a look at this list, drop your car off at the Gatwick meet and greet, and you’ll be lounging in the sun in no time.

Madrid

The largest city in Spain, Madrid is home to a wonderful melting pot of sunshine and high culture.

To start your trip, have a wander around Madrid’s Art Triangle, home to the Museo del Prado, the Reina Sofia and the Thyssen-Bornemisza, for all manner of styles, architecture and infamous works of art.

For an even more traditional Spanish feel, try visiting a flamenco restaurant. In the Corral de la Moreria, for example, you’ll be treated to shows from the finest flamenco dancers in the world, all the while eating meals that could make almost any mouth water.

But the best thing about the city is its natural beauty. As the sunlight shimmers on plazas and packed pavements, you’ll feel energised simply by watching the place pulse with its unique energy.

Tenerife

Another sunlit paradise, Tenerife is the place to be for clean, glistening beaches and an island culture that, despite the mass influx of tourists, still maintains its natural beauty.

Head along the coast to spot bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales, as well as tourist treats including water buggy rides and secluded alcoves to sunbathe and relax.

If you’re not one for lazing about, this picturesque spot offers activities such as horse riding, mountain climbing and nature parks for those of you who want a more adventurous holiday.

Ibiza

Ibiza – home to some of the most famous nightclubs in the world (Amnesia, Pacha and USHUAÏA, to name just a few) a part of this island is dedicated to the latest dance music, raves and celebrity hangouts that would make even the most jaded music-snob hit the dance floor.

However, that’s just part of Ibiza’s charm. In its older sections, you’ll find a slower pace, as well as architectural wonders like the Castle of Ibiza, a mediaeval build that puts Amnesia to shame with its stunning scenery.

Corfu

A tourist hotspot, the Greek island of Corfu maintains a huge array of its ancient architecture amidst its sunny beaches. The finest place to soak up the sun on this paradise is Paleokastritsa Beach, the winner of the best beaches category on Trip Advisor in 2013.

Add to this a series of stunning views, intoxicating hiking locations and natural wonders, and you’ll regret having to return to musty old Britain at your holiday’s end.
