A letter from Janet Hemsley – Food waste

Your article on food waste in issue 296 March 2017 made me want to put pen to paper or should I say fingers to Ipad. My husband and I waste very, very little by me shopping wisely particularly with fruit and vegetables, storing most of it in the drawers at the bottom of the fridge. If I buy a savoy or sweetheart cabbage this will be perfectly usable for at least three weeks as you don’t want the same veg every day. This applies to root veg as well. I prepare and cook enough for our meals each day and if there are leftovers I put in the fridge and use the next day so zero waste from our household. We do despair at the reported countrywide food waste but we were brought up during wartime food rationing – waste not want not was our way of life.
