A letter from Janet Entwistle – Values

A letter from Janet Entwistle – Values

I taught young children for over thirty years and we always had a ‘values – based education system’. ‘Do as you would be done by’, ‘Do unto others as you wish they would do unto you’. From Enid Blyton to religious texts it’s all you need to know.

Ask anyone what they value in a friend or acquaintance, people need to think for themselves. Values are deep held beliefs which govern our behaviour and these deep held beliefs need to be things that we have worked out for ourselves – not something foisted on us to keep us in line. We need role models not rule makers.
