May I take issue with Andrew Young over his view on the progress of the monarchy (February MT newsletter) and his lack of understanding of the Queen’s attitude.
At the time of her coronation she stated unequivocally, and has repeated since, that she would never abdicate as she regards her position as a sacred trust not in her power to relinquish. So I don’t believe she is “ready to stand aside”.
Andrew’s opinion of Prince Charles is clear but not shared by everyone. I’m sure I’m not alone in believing that he has earned his right to succeed his mother, when the time comes. After all, it is highly unlikely that prince William will have to wait anything like as long; do the sums.
