“Best thing I’ve ever done”

“Best thing I’ve ever done”

Ten years ago, a British Red Cross first aid volunteer was confronted at his front door with a scene he’ll never forget. Alex McTaggart had popped back home to his flat during a work break when there was a loud rap at the door – he opened it to find his neighbour Andrew holding his one-year-old daughter Megan.

Alex recalls: “Megan was just lying there floppy in her dad’s arms with a blue face, and wasn’t breathing. I told him to phone 999, then put her on the kitchen table and started performing CPR. It felt like forever, but after a few minutes I heard the most wonderful sound I have ever heard – she started crying.”

Ten years on the delighted pensioner says: “It was a very traumatic experience for both of us, and to see Megan now, so alive, is wonderful.”

Alex has been a Red Cross volunteer for 23 years, and he’s convinced his first aid skills are the reason Megan is still here today.

Without the generosity of its supporters the Red Cross would be unable to continue much of its work here in the UK and abroad. Gifts in wills allow us to respond immediately to emergencies and prepare for the future, making sure we are always there to help people in crisis. If you would consider making a promise to provide help for future generations through a gift in your will we’d love to hear from you. Please call 0844 412 2848 or go to redcross.org.uk/giftinwill
