1961   The contraceptive pill    is made available on the NHS

John Lennon1980   John Lennon     shot dead in New York

1988   Edwina Currie      provoked outrage by saying that most British eggs were infected by salmonella

1990   The Channel Tunnel     joins Britain and France as the last wall is removed

1995    Rogue Trader   Nick Leeson is jailed for 6 years
