Take a glimpse into a ceramic winter wonderland

The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery is home to the finest collection of Staffordshire ceramics in the world. Along with this fabulous permanent collection and a series of fascinating galleries, this winter, visitors to the museum can enjoy the truly seasonal ceramic exhibition: A Winter Wonderland.

All the seasons of the year have played a big part in shaping our daily lives from pre-history to today, inspiring and influencing ceramic art and design. This is a display of ceramics from the museum’s collections whose shape, form, decoration and design have been inspired by winter and all that the season brings, from holly to snowmen.

Whether it is a design or pattern name, a depiction of the flowers and animals we associate most with winter, festive celebrations, or a wintry landscape, the unique aspects of life during winter provide a wonderland of inspiration. Many designs, such Josiah Wedgwood’s ‘Winter’ jasper candlesticks (modelled by William Hackwood, the highly regarded modeller for Josiah Wedgwood from 1769 until 1832) and Spode’s ‘Christmas Tree’ design, have become iconic symbols of the season of winter and our end of year festivals.

The museum’s galleries and displays tell the story of this region’s people, its industries, geology and wildlife. A number of the artefacts from the fabulous seventh-century Staffordshire Hoard are displayed in the Anglo Saxon Kingdom of Mercia gallery. Their arts collections are acknowledged as being of national, as well as regional significance; the fine art collection includes 20th-century British paintings, sculpture and prints; highlights of decorative arts collection includes the doll’s house replica of the 18th-century Barlaston Hall , costume, contemporary ceramics and glass.
