I was interested to read Madeleine Ferrar’s article, especially as I have over the years visited many hostels, and being a life member of the Youth Hostels Association.
I thought that I must write however, and point out that sadly the organisation has changed in the last couple of years and it no longer seems to appreciate the support of many members, including life ones.
Up to about four years ago it issued a regular handbook listing all of its hotels, and other information. As I had not received one of these, or indeed any other communication for some time, I wrote enquiring as to the position and to my utter surprise was told that the Association had declined to no longer communicate with members who were not on email, and all this without any warning or notice whatsoever!
Although I have been in communication over the matter nothing satisfactory has evolved. I am most annoyed how such a body that once was a really great organisation has sadly “lost its way” so to speak.
