Calling all sports fans!

Whether you are a sports fan who actually takes part, or is just happy to watch from the grandstand or the sofa, sport plays a huge part in our nation’s culture.

In fact, while millions like to watch, many are happy to complain about partners spending too much time engrossed in viewing sports and games. A match, be it football, tennis or athletics is one of the few events when you cannot predict the outcome with total certainty.

We can usually guess who is the murdered in a “whodunnit” especially if you have already seen it or read the book; but the excitement generated by hoping that Andy Murray could beat Novak Djokovic this time, is incalculable. And the sense of national unity in sport is rarely replicated elsewhere in our lives: remember the Olympics?

We all know that playing sport is hugely beneficial for our bodies but even if you are confined to being a spectator there is still plenty to be gained from being involved.

I am always sad when the football seasons ends, and wonder how I am going to cope without the excitement of sharing my team’s triumphs or failures; but then I remember that summer brings many more sports and that football will be back soon.

The summer sports season usually starts in earnest in early April with the Boat Race and the Grand National being staged last weekend, but there is plenty to look forward to this month.

The 12th sees the start of the County Cricket season. The top nine teams in Division One will hopefully provide us with an exciting competition and we Have the test match with Australia to look forward to.

This month also sees the Grand Prix in Bahrain for those who enjoy watching fast, noisy cars circle a track, I know lots of you do.

The London Marathon is scheduled for 26th April and is always an entertaining sight and I know that a few of our readers will have been training hard to join in and raise money for charity.

The tennis tour has served up some excitement with Andy Murray doing well in the Miami Open and we have some new British talent coming through to add some patriotism to both men’s and women’s matches.

For equestrian fans Badminton Horse Trials start at the beginning of May and we have plenty of racing events around the country.

Now is the time to start planning your sports calendar and think about getting out with a picnic and actually watching some events played live,

Let us know what are your favourite sports and if you participate – we’d love to hear from you.
