Gardening tip of the week

Gardening tip of the week

Harvest the last of your apples, pears, grapes and nuts, then prune your apple and pear trees. It’s not as difficult as you might think – although be prepared for a considerable amount of clearing up of twigs and branches afterwards!

These can be shredded if you have suitable equipment, or why not make a log pile which will benefit insects and small mammals over the winter?

Trees that are not pruned become less productive as time progresses. Aim to create an ‘open goblet’ shape. Don’t be tempted to prune restricted forms of fruit tree such as espaliers, cordons and fans, however – also stone fruit trees such as plums. These are prone to injury in winter and should be tackled gently in early summer.
