Threat of care home closures a disaster says NFOP

The National Federation of Occupational Pensioners (NFOP) is extremely concerned about the threat of closure to thousands of care homes following a warning from the care industry about the impact of the introduction of the National Living Wage.

Malcolm Booth CEO - NFOPA group of organisations that represent the care industry; Bupa, Barchester, Care UK, HC-One and Four Seasons, and Care England, have written to Chancellor George Osborne warning that the introduction of the living wage will cost every residential care bed an extra £18 and could lead to the closure of more than 9,000 care homes.

Malcolm Booth, CEO of NFOP, said: “The concerns raised by the industry about the potential closure of 9000 care homes would be a disaster for many vulnerable elderly residents.

“It demonstrates the urgent need to review the level of funding provided by local government and central government for this essential service.”
