Help to end loneliness by having a good chinwag

Age UK Notts takes part in national fundraising event on 20th June aimed at ending loneliness for local older people

Age UK Notts is taking part in a new national fundraising event to help tackle loneliness among older people. The Charity wants to encourage local people to host a Big Chinwag event and get together with their friends, family or colleagues on the 20th of June and raise vital funds for older people. The Big Chinwag can be anything; a bake sale, tea party or even cocktails with friends.

More than 39,000 local older people see their family, friends and neighbours less than once a week and a further 100,000 say the TV is their main form of company. Loneliness is more than an emotional experience: it is just as damaging to an older person’s health as lifelong smoking and alcoholism and dramatically increases the chances of developing dementia and depression. Age UK Notts has been campaigning to end loneliness since 2012 and they hope this fundraising event will raise the vital funds needed to provide services and support to local lonely and isolated people.

Maria Cooke, Development Manager at Age UK Notts, said “We’ve been highlighting the problem of loneliness for some time now and we’re thrilled that local people are willing to support such a good cause. Hosting a Big Chinwag is a really simple way to help local lonely and isolated people and have fun at the same time. Hundreds of people across the country will be taking part in the event so we hope the people of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire are looking forward to being part of something so new and exciting.”
