Cult all-male Aussie vaudeville act is back

Robert Tanitch reviews Briefs at London Wonderground, South Bank Centre

Briefs: The Second Coming is an all-male circus cabaret. It’s vaudeville, it’s camp, it’s butch, and it’s boylesque rather than burlesque. The drag artistes have beards, hairy chests and bare bums.

The boys, a self-styled trash brat pack from Australia, are performing until the end of September in a wooden tent which is right bang next to Hungerford Bridge and the Golden Jubilee Bridges and seconds away from the London Eye. They sold out when they were here last year.

Tanitch at the Theatre

Fez Faanana is the compere. High spots include the well-drilled opening tease number with ostrich feathers, Louis Biggs juggling with hats, Thom Worrell doing dangerous aerial acrobatics on a circular trapeze, and Mark Winmill making a big splash in a birdbath.

Ben Lewis plays with his banana. The show is tiresomely vulgar. I much preferred the infinitely superior Black Cat Cabaret which I saw last week in the very same venue.
