Aussie rules voting

Regarding the question of voting in the UK and the apparent attitude of apathy towards the subject may I illustrate the system that Australia has adopted?

Voting is not compulsory but registering to vote is: non-compliance results in a hefty fine. Whether one votes, leaves the ballot paper blank or spoils it, is not relevant. Postal voting is acceptable.

Proportional representation in voting is in effect there and is accepted as a much fairer system by the majority.
