Time to get off your backside and explore country and city

Robert Tanitch reviews two guide books.

LOST RAILWAY WALKS by Julian Holland (Collins £14.99).Explore 100 of Britain’s lost railways. Dr Beeching has a lot to answer for; and especially to lovers of railways. But there is a plus side. There are now miles and miles of picturesque and signposted walks. Walkers, hikers, joggers, cyclists, horse-riders and dogs will find this guide to lost railways and lost railway stations and lost railway bridges useful and attractive. There are also modern photographs and fascinating historical photographs plus maps. Each entry has a bit of history plus details of refreshment points, car parking and nearby heritage spots.

LONDON A to Z by John Metcalf (Thames & Hudson £6.95) was first published in 1953 when thousands were coming to London for the coronation. We all know what Dr Johnson said. The guide is quirky, charming, humorous and now nostalgic. Bed and Breakfast costs between 15 and 21 shillings a night and eating out costs between six shillings and 12/6. The Lord Mayor receives a salary of £12,500 but he has so many commitments that only a rich man can accept the office. Telephone numbers still have letters and numbers. Tourists are also told not to tip a policeman for telling you the way to somewhere. Parking is already a problem and you are advised to leave your car at home and travel by bus, tube and taxi.
