Britain from the Rails – A window gazers guide

Britain from the Rails – A window gazers guide

If you love trains and love the British countryside this book is for you.  The latest of the Bradt Travel Guides written by Benedict Le Vay was published in November and contains the full package of route and journey information with beautiful pictures and what to look for out of your window as you rattle your way through the landscapes.

Britain from the rails coverIt is a popular way to travel and with the current fashion for rail travel enhanced  by several recent television series including BBC’s Michael Portillo’s Great Railway Journeys, Channel 4’s Trains with Pete Waterman,  and the current Channel 5 broadcast of First Great Western.

This charming guide takes you around and across England, Scotland and Wales with fascinating snippets of information about its towns, bridges and backwaters.  I have learnt more about the engineering feats of Isambard Kingdom Brunel that I really needed to know but thoroughly enjoyed.  And about the man himself and his philandering ways.

This book is a travel guide and a history book.  It is both entertaining and informative and I surprised myself with how much time I spent reading it with no intention of taking any railways journeys in the near future.  If you know someone who is a train aficionado, buy them this book.  Or buy it for yourself and plan your own railway adventure.

Take this book on the train with you but be careful that you don’t miss any of the sights by being engrossing in reading it.
