In Spain General Franco’s dictatorship ends in 1975

Some of the events that seemed momentous at the time have now been absorbed into everyday life.

1955  Princess Margaret cancels wedding   she calls off her plans to marry Group Captain Peter Townsend.

1957  Lords to admit first women peers    the Government reveals plans to reform the House of Lords including creating first women life peerages.

1975   Franco’s 36 year reign ends   in Spain General Franco’s dictatorship ends with the announcement of heir designate Prince Carlos will take over as provisional head of state.

1977  Liberal MP denies murder plot   former Liberal leader Jeremy Thorpe has denied any involvement in a plot to kill Norman Scott
