Richard Burton implies (Get Moving, Sept 2016) you can lose weight by exercising, however, he fails to mention it could well take an hour at the gym – incidentally working up an appetite for lunch – to burn off what it took only a minute to swallow at the breakfast table such is the relationship between heat and mechanical energy. This relationship has been known for 150 years and is now expressed on most food labels. Indecently you will burn off more energy sleeping overnight than exercising for an hour at the gym; the choice is very much yours.
