Whatever happened to Boarding Houses?

When I was younger they were all around – Dictionary definition: “Lodging House where meals may be had”.

What has prompted me to ask this question? July’s Mature Times despairing letters of loneliness – “An empty and silent house, nobody to greet you and offer a cup of tea”, and “The only voice coming from a radio or TV”.

Surely, a return of the friendly boarding house is the answer – not a radical step into sheltered housing, but a normal “family home” atmosphere, with a communal dining room and lounge, and one’s private bedroom and en suite, and, of course all kinds of opportunities for shared interests and outings.

Also a great investment for a large house owner who finds him/herself alone but does not wish to relinquish their family home.
