A humble couple who’ve scooped £1m on the Euromillions Lottery plan to splash
their cash on a VW POLO.
Brenda Nugent, 73, carried on washing up after hearing she and husband Tom had struck lucky, and they have since been getting to grips with their new-found fortune.
Despite their sudden wealth, the couple have no plans to move from their hometown of Garstang, Lancs., after correctly drawing the raffle from the Camelot draw on Tuesday night.
Tom, 78, said: “We’re a bit too old to get excited.
“I looked at the numbers and said to myself ‘rubbish as usual’, but then discovered we had won.
“The best thing is we can look after our family now which is growing with our five great grandchildren.”
It was double luck for Tom who decided to check his lottery numbers after watching his football team Preston North End win.
Having entered the Euromillions draw since its launch, he revealed he never normally checks his results until the morning after, but felt luck was in the air so he looked to see if his number had come up.
Although they hadn’t he then checked his Millionaire Maker code and discovered they were winners with the raffle code RTC4T-0920.
He said: “I was just a bit shocked really – you just go numb.”
Tom rechecked the result another four times he called out to Brenda who was reading in bed.
Brenda said: “We knew we had won, but we didnt like to say until somebody had told us we’d won.”
The couple, who have seven grandchildren after marrying 19 years ago, will share their wealth among their family, and plan to pay for their family’s holiday to Spain later this year.
Tom added: “Our seven grandchildren were next and they were just over the moon.
“Things like this don’t happen to people like us, it is a life changing moment and we are so lucky.
“They are all going on a Family holiday to Spain next year which I’m sure we can upgrade for them now.”
Tom is also considering renewing his season ticket for Preston North End following their 3-1 victory against Notts County on Tuesday.
He added: “I might even get a box.”
