Once in a Lifetime Holiday Experiences

If you’ve found yourself daydreaming of distant shores and warmer climes of late, you’re not alone. And we personally thinks it’s time to stop dreaming of those crystalline seas and open roads, and go out and chase that horizon. But where to start? We’ve taken a look at some of our top once in a lifetime holiday destinations to help inspire your travels.

Road Trip: Route 66

There’s something so exciting about the idea of hitting the open road and driving across America, and there is no better way to do it than following the old U.S. Route 66. Built in 1926, Route 66 was one of the original highways of the United States and is by far the most famous. It used to run from Chicago all the way to Santa Monica in California, 2448 miles (3940km) west, but was decommissioned in 1985. Although it may be somewhat worse for wear these days, there is something about ‘America’s Main Street’ that still resonates today and never fails to capture the imagination of those with an adventurous spirit.

There is so much to see along Route 66, the hard part is knowing where to start. There is a multitude of quirky attractions en route, including the Blue Whale in Oklahoma, Adobe architecture in New Mexico and the iconic Cadillac Ranch in Texas. There is plenty of kitsch to look out for along the way, but make sure you don’t miss the opportunity to explore some of the spectacular national parks along the Route 66. The Grand Canyon, Yellowstone and Mount Rushmore are not to be missed, along with others such as Arches and the Badlands.

The easiest way to see Route 66 is to hire a car, and whether you’re hitting the road for a week, a month or even longer, a road trip across America is an extraordinary experience that you will remember for the rest of your life. Find out more about car hire along Route 66 with Alamo.co.uk.

Paradise IslandTropical Island Paradise: Bali, Indonesia

Bali is synonymous with tropical paradise. Not only is it beautiful, exotic and wonderfully diverse, there is something about it that is so accessible, which probably has something to do with the Balinese locals. The inhabitants of this idyllic island are warm and friendly, and incredibly open to sharing their culture with tourists. Take the time to relax and enjoy their traditional music played on ‘gamelans’ and ancient ‘Legong’ dances, or simply sit back and enjoy one of the many joyful temple processions that regularly parade through Bali at different intervals throughout the day.
