Christine Walkden, backs the British Red Cross Great Spring Gardening Event

Renowned plants woman and horticulturist, Christine Walkden is supporting the Great Spring Gardening Event – an annual fundraiser in aid of the British Red Cross which takes place on Wednesday 29 April 2015 in Herefordshire.

Christine is the resident gardening expert on The One Show on BBC 1 TV at 7.00pm

“The British Red Cross carry out such good work that it is my pleasure to offer my support for their spring gardening event.  I wish all attending a great day and hope it will raise larges amounts for this great charity.”

Once again we are delighted to hold the event at Whitfield Estate, nr. Wormbridge, HR2 9BA with the kind permission of Mr and Mrs Edward Clive and Mr Nigel Winney.

The property, not generally open to the public, is located 8m SW of Hereford, on the A465 Hereford to Abergavenny road.

The event itself will take place on the parkland, but visitors will also have access to some of the private gardens.  Features include wild flowers, ponds, a walled garden, many flowering magnolias (species and hybrids), a ginkgo tree dating from 1780, and a 1½m woodland walk with a redwood grove from 1851.

Last year’s 2014 event held at Hampton Court Castle, Leominster brought visitor numbers to just over 2,000.  The total sum was just over £38,000, a record for this event.

Caroline Savage, senior community fundraiser at the Red Cross in Herefordshire, Shropshire, and Worcestershire said: “We are delighted to be returning to Whitfield for next year’s Great Spring Gardening Event, it’s a wonderful venue providing a perfect setting for our event”.

Our services support people to maintain their independence; this could involve anything from loaning a wheelchair, providing transport to medical appointments, or supporting them to return home after a stay in hospital.  We also provide first aid at events, community first aid training, emergency response and our youth team helps young people develop humanitarian values and gain vital life skills.”

The Spring Garden Event organising committee is made up of volunteers and provides invaluable support, each member bringing relevant experience to the event. They are ably assisted by a large team of volunteers.

This annual gardening event will feature over 80 exhibitors , nurseries, corporate supporters and sponsors will come together to provide a selection of garden related items, plants, country clothing and outdoor lifestyle ranges.

The event runs from 10.30am to 4.30pm. Ticket price includes entrance to the event and some of the private gardens. Admission is £7.00 per person at the entrance gate or £6.00, in advance, via www.redcross.org.uk/gardeningevent
