Spain is a beautiful part of Europe and with cheap flights making it more accessible than ever, it’s no surprise that millions of holiday goers visit the country every year.
But this popularity has seen tourists discovering the same tired and old attractions, and limiting their discovery of one of the Mediterranean’s finest countries. There is a multitude of things to do and see if they’d just venture off the beaten track.
Whether it’s all inclusive holiday deals in rural Spain, short stays in romantic fishing villages or cultural trips to some of the country’s best kept secrets, if you want to discover the real Spain then this guide is the perfect place to start.
Here are five sure fire ways to experience the good life and take the road less travelled in this unforgettable part of Europe.
Majorca
Holidays to Majorca are renowned for their beautiful white sandy beaches and its diverse nightlife, which is popular with young travellers and partygoers alike, but that isn’t all this wonderful island has to offer.
The unseen side of the island boasts spectacular period architecture – the Arab Baths, La Seau and Bellver Castle are all within the confines of the capital, Palma.
If you prefer natural wonders then the Coves Del Drac will not disappoint, visitors are treated to spectacular vistas and impressive limestone caves, while animal lovers will relish the chance to walk around the unspoilt S’Albufera Natural Park.
Majorca really does have something for everyone, venture to the parts of the island that the locals prefer to keep secret and you’ll enjoy the holiday of a lifetime.
Cirauqui
Cirauqui is a sight for sore eyes for visitors, and this medieval town would have been the same for weary travellers hundreds of years ago. Perched atop a hill, you can see this wonderful time capsule of a location as you approach it, wandering the surrounding dust-ridden roads.
Once inside prepare for winding streets, wonderful stonemasonry (complete with balconies reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet) and some cosy places to stay. Enjoy a glass of locally produced wine, eat the simple yet delicious food and relax in a town that refuses to be dragged into the 21st Century.
Noia
If you prefer the coastal beauty of Spain then Noia is the perfect destination. Framed by magnificent mountains and nestled on the Galician coast, Noia was immortalised in the Spanish film, ‘The Sea Inside’, which won the 2004 best foreign film Oscar.
Expect cobblestone streets, a quaint church and some bustling restaurants and bars and be sure to try the seafood platter that this area is famed for, foodies will not be disappointed!
Molinaseca
If you’re a firm believer that first impressions mean a lot, you will certainly love the small town of Molinaseca. As you come through the mountains you will come to a beautiful arched stone bridge crossing the river Meruelo.
This bridge is called the Puente de Peregrinos or Pilgrims’ Bridge, and forms the dramatic gateway to this pretty little town. Once you’ve crossed the bridge you will be greeted by vibrant restaurants filled with laughter and local music, and original architecture dating back to the 18th Century.
Astorga
Originally the Roman town of Asturica, Astorga is a grand town encircled by intact Roman walls and history. The Palace for Bishops is a breath-taking example of architecture and was in fact designed by the famous architect, Antonio Gaudí.
The town is renowned for its chocolate and you will soon realise why if you visit one of the many shops specialising in this tantalising treat. There’s even a chocolate museum if you’d like to learn more about the town’s chocolate making history but beware, after all that wonderful sweet stuff you’ll probably need a lie down before hitting one of the buzzing local cafés, restaurants or bars.
