Call for volunteers for pioneering new project to help older prisoners return to society

The number of older people in prison has doubled over the last decade, especially in the 60 plus age group, and with an ageing prison population has come an increase in psychological distress, depression and dementia - problems which the prison service are struggling to deal with. Age Concern has established a pioneering new service to help these people reintegrate with society when they come out - and is looking for volunteers to help them with their work.

As most of us manage to break most of our New Year's resolutions by around January 21st, why not do something that will be easy to stick to - and volunteer at a PDSA shop in 2008? In return for donating your time, you will be rewarded with the satisfaction of helping sick and injured animals, developing new skills and making new friends. And volunteering also looks great on your CV if you are job hunting.

The Citizens Advice Service (CAB) has been helping people resolve their financial, legal and other problems since 1939, and now we desperately need more volunteers to offer their time, skills, knowledge and experience to help deal with the millions of problems people bring to us every year.

In isolated communities, having a accident can mean hours before vital help arrives - by which time it may be too late. Fortunately, many hundreds of lives are saved each year by Air Ambulances, which can get to the scene of an accident within minutes - and save lives.

Children's cancer charity looking for more volunteers

CLIC has more than 1,000 volunteers: many of those work in the charity’s 28 shops, 150 work on the front line supporting children, young people and families directly, more than 400 run committees and branches each raising much needed funds for the organisation, and the remaining volunteer in CLIC Sargent offices around the UK. Together last year they helped raise more than £2 million of its £19.7 million total income - and if you'd like to further their excellent work through volunteering, they'd love to hear from you.
