Tied up, strapped to chairs, drugged, and locked up - the restraint of older people is under-reported in care homes, says The Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) who have today (17 December) published a report (Rights, Risks and restraints’), stating that "evidence from inspectors’ reports reveal that levels of restraint are much higher than those recorded by staff in care homes".

Southwark's Safeguarding Adults Partnership has launched a ‘Let’s protect them this Christmas’ campaign to bring people’s attention to the sad statistics around abuse of older people. In the UK four per cent of those aged 65 and over suffer from some form of abuse - often carried out by a member of their own family or someone close to them.

We have all seen media coverage of elder abuse. But, says June Clarkson, there are other forms of abuse that go completely unheeded or hidden. This is not the kind of abuse that causes bruises or fear in the people being looked after, but it is abuse nevertheless.
