Octogenarian Ted Howard, from Ramsey, spent 15 years piecing together 2,000 fragments of love letters to his late wife, which she tore up when she caught someone else reading it. At the time he never realised that by doing so he would end up writing an autobiography after developing computer skills - and scoop the Special Judging Panel award at the regional learndirect Achievement Award ceremony.

Older workers at 50+ bear brunt of job turndown

Employment figures from the Office for National Statistics show a fall of 9,000 in the number of people aged 50 to state pension age in employment - 1,000 fewer men and 8,000 fewer women.

The latest Labour Market figures from the Office for National Statistics show that there has been a staggering 8.6% increase in the employment of the over 65s, compared to just 1.2% for those aged 16-64. This brings the total number of pensioners now in work to over 1.3m.

Whether through necessity or desire, the number of people working over the state pension age increased by 35,000 to a staggering 1.258 million between September-November 2007 - and it is almost certainly has very little to do with the new Age Discrimination laws.

The Age and Employment Network has welcomed the latest employment figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) which show that the number of people aged 50 to state pension age in paid work was 6.588 million, having increased in the three months Dec 07-Feb 08 by 30,000 and over the past 12 months by 120,000.

Compulsory e-filing of pensions angers small businesses

E-filing pension administration came into force on October 16th, which means that all pension scheme administrators are now obliged to submit an array of information electronically - but the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has criticised the new legislation, pointing out that forcing small businesses to file pension administration electronically should be a choice - not an obligation.
