No prayers before council meetings
- Wednesday, 22 February 2012
Hypocrisy? Maybe.
Councils are now discouraged from public prayers before meetings. Nothing will stop the God-fearing from praying privately. Were the really important pre-council meeting “headstogethers” also preceded by prayers? Some decisions are attacked by voters.
Stem cell replacement organs
- Wednesday, 22 February 2012
In all the “public consultation” about the removal of organs in hospital for transplant to other patients, I have heard not a word about the undoubted ongoing work of growing stem cell replacement organs in sterile laboratory conditions.
Surely a whole battery of such germ free organs could be kept ready for immediate use nationally. No difficult and/or heartbreaking decisions would be necessary.

A happy retirement
- Wednesday, 22 February 2012
A group of us, all in our mid to late 50’s were having a discussion. We had all been working for 40 or more years and all suffered from severe aches and pains as a result. We all had hobbies and interests we would love to devote more time to. So we would all have welcomed early retirement, but couldn’t afford it.
Airport to nowhere
- Wednesday, 22 February 2012
Spain, visited by many Britons, has many regional airports, all paid for by the European Union, Only 11 of the 48 regional airports, built in this manner during the last 20 years makes a profit.
older drivers
- Wednesday, 22 February 2012
it is thought-provoking to learn that a record number of one million British drivers are now aged 80 and over, according to figures published by the DVLA. We are also told that some 65,000 are now over 90, with 122 of them having celebrated their 100th birthday. Apparently, the oldest motorist on record is now aged 106.
Don’t lecture us - February's Best Letter
- Monday, 20 February 2012
When I was younger, one often heard tales of neglect for the elderly but I never thought it to be any more than simply older people wanting more, as do younger people. Now rising 76, I have come to realise that it is not just neglect, it is a downright misunderstanding of the problems, the requirements - and in some cases the abilities - of the elderly which are the sticking points.
Don’t pull out cats’ eyes
- Monday, 20 February 2012
Around mid-Kent, and I suspect nationwide, the use of cats’ eyes as aids to ascertain the edge of the roads is disappearing rapidly. The reflective cats’ eyes were highly effective and cost efficient and their absence, especially in country areas which are badly lit if lit at all, means that many drivers rely on full headlights.
Lest we forget
- Monday, 20 February 2012
As an avid reader of Mature Times over the last few years and being a Senior Citizen, it is nice to know we are seen to be useful, by, for example, looking after grandchildren. But everyone seems to go on about how much longer we live and how much this costs.
True measure of worth
- Monday, 20 February 2012
So much financial doom and gloom is predicted for the times ahead, but my hope for 2012 is that people will see things as they really are. We chase after money and material possessions as if they were the be all and end all, but you came into this world with nothing and you’ll leave it with nothing.
