I was amazed to read in one of the letters in the July issue: “The most important argument for the EU is that this institution has maintained the peace in Europe for almost 70 years”.
For one thing the EU has only existed for a fraction of that time. I cannot think of any institution more likely to disturb that peace with all the warring factions.
Has your correspondent not heard of NATO?
