Tap into your local library in Leicester

Do you find it difficult, or are physically unable, to get to your local library? Or know somebody who would welcome a helping hand? Do you live in Leicester?  If the answer is yes, Leicester Libraries - Home Library Service can help.

The Home Library Minibus service is free and run by the City Council.

Gill and Colin will pick you up direct from your home take you to the library. If you want they will help select and carry your books, talking books and videos at the library before taking you home again. They also carry stocks of Mature Times.

The new library minibus is equipped with wheelchair facilities and a tail-lift, and covers 24 different routes over a three-week period.

At present the following libraries are visited: Beaumont Leys, Belgrave, Evington, Fosse, Highfields, Rushey Mead, St. Barnabas, Southfields and Westcotes. This service is a great way for people to maintain their independence, use library services and meet new friends.

In the words of one regular user, Freda, “ I love getting out and about, and being picked up and taken to the library to actually choose my own books is so lovely, as are the staff who look after us - Colin and Jill.

“I would recommend the service to anyone who enjoys a good read, but finds it difficult to get to a library.”

Annie Spencer, who runs the Home Library Service, commented,
“In addition to bringing people to the library, we also deliver books, talking books and sound recordings to people who cannot get out of their own home.”
