New home for abandoned dogs

Oswald, a resident pooch, nobly bit through a string of sausages to mark the official opening of special new kennels for up to 30 dogs at Dogs Trust in Snetterton in Norfolk.

The construction of the new kennel block for Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, was made possible by a generous legacy left by the late Mr & Mrs Connie and Alan Dunn, who had been supporters of Dogs Trust for some time.

Staff, supporters and volunteer dog-walkers welcomed the opening of the new block - a special area where newly arrived, stray and abandoned dogs will live until they have been fully assessed, their health checked and are ready to move into the main building for rehoming. The new kennel block also has its own isolation room, veterinary room and grooming suite.

Special guest and Dogs Trust Trustee, Rose McIlrath, held little Oswald as he munched his way though the sausages. A four-year old terrier, Oswald is one of almost 70 dogs currently being cared for by the Centre. Also present were Jan and Richard Motley, close friends of Mr. & Mrs. Dunn, who left the bequest to the charity. Jan Motley said: "Connie and Alan would be so pleased with the smart new building, and with the knowledge that it will help staff at the centre care and find homes for a great many more dogs in need.”

Dogs Trust is the UK’s largest dog welfare charity and cares for over 14,000 stray and abandoned dogs each year through its network of 17 Rehoming Centres across the UK.
