Walkers even more welcome in the Yorkshire Wolds
28/05/2009
A new walking pack launched by Visit Hull & East Yorkshire will offer a handy guide to a host of walks - from leisurely strolls to serious treks across the rolling landscape of the Yorkshire Wolds.
Packed with routes to suit all ages and paces, walkers can enjoy gentle hills and tranquil dales, stroll through traditional market towns – and even join in ‘Giant Bradley Day’ in the home-village of ’the tallest Englishman who ever lived’.
For the first time, 15 of the best East Yorkshire Wolds walks have been brought together in one easy-to-use pack offering inspiration to walkers of all abilities.
Britain’s most northerly exposure of chalk, the Yorkshire Wolds is ideal walking country with rolling countryside and picturesque villages offering everything from East Yorkshire’s first ‘Walkers are Welcome’ designated town, to one of the region’s most successful arts centres.
Launched on 4th May, Visit Hull & East Yorkshire’s new packs consist of 20 A5 laminated full colour cards in a plastic wallet - perfect for all-weather walking.
Costing just £6 per pack, they have general information about the Yorkshire Wolds as well as detailed routes, maps and handy hints for the 15 selected walks. Each walk is graded for distance and duration to help visitors choose the right route, whether they are seasoned hikers or just looking for a leisurely amble.
Among highlights are treks through some of the Yorkshire Wolds’ most appealing towns and villages where walkers can take a break, enjoy some Yorkshire hospitality or discover a hidden gem.
And striking new interpretative boards recently installed by Visit Hull & East Yorkshire in the key Wolds towns of Pocklington, Market Weighton and Driffield offer even more help for visitors. They feature notable dates in the history of each market town, essential things to see and do and information about nearby attractions.
In Market Weighton, an attractive market town nestling at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds, for example, how about following in the footsteps of the town’s most famous son, William Bradley (1787 – 1820) ’the tallest Englishman who ever lived’?
The Bradley Heritage Trail is a circular tour of the town’s historic buildings, picturesque green and High Street. Or - if visiting on Spring Bank Holiday Sunday – why not join-in ‘Giant Bradley Day’, a fun-packed festival of events for all the family
Located within easy walking distance of the Yorkshire Wolds and Wolds Way National Trail, Market Weighton makes an ideal base for walking and cycling and recently became the first in East Yorkshire to gain ‘Walkers are Welcome’ status, a nationally acclaimed scheme.
Elsewhere, Driffield - regarded as the ‘Capital of the Wolds’- offers a vibrant market town shopping experience with a bustling street market every Thursday and the area’s premier farmer’s market staged on the first Saturday of the month.
On the western edge of the Wolds, Pocklington is a charming market town with a thriving cultural heart. The town centre is characterised by red pantile roofs, unusual street names and twisting alleys, while Pocklington Arts Centre is one of the region’s most successful arts centres with a flourishing theatre, art studio and cinema.
As well as offering individual walks, the area is also at the heart of The Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail, a 79-mile route from Hessle near Hull through to Filey on the North Yorkshire Coast.
The new Yorkshire Wolds walking packs will initially be available from local Tourist Information Centres as well as by contacting Louisa Walker on 01482 486563 or louisa.walker@vhey.co.uk
And if the routes in the new pack offer motivation to search out more walks then one of the best sources of information is the Walking the Riding website, www.walkingtheriding.gov.uk
