Outdoor sculptors welcomed for prize commission competition
18/06/2008
Since its creation in 2001, the Jerwood Sculpture Prize has become one of the most significant commissioning prizes for sculpture in the UK - and entries are now being accepted for 2008. Every two years one lucky artist wins £25,000 to create a piece of outdoor sculpture which then becomes part of the Jerwood Sculpture collection at Ragley, Warwickshire.
The prize is structured to promote and reward emerging talent in the creation of outdoor sculpture - with age no barrier. It is open to anyone within fifteen years of graduation who is either a British citizen, a citizen of the Irish Republic, or a sculptor who has lived or worked in the UK for at least the last three years. Artists are invited to submit drawings, written statements and plans for their proposed commission, along with their current CV.
From the open submission entry a shortlist of eight artists will be drawn up who will then be commissioned to develop their proposal and to produce a maquette. The commissioned maquettes will go on display at the Jerwood Space in April 2009 and during the exhibition the winner will be announced.
Roanne Dods, Director of the Jerwood Charitable Foundation says:
“Creating large scale outdoor work is often prohibitively expensive for artists in the earlier stages of their careers. This commission was created to give talented artists opportunities to develop their ideas in a structured and supportive approach, and in ways that would otherwise be next to impossible for them to pursue alone. At the same time it enables us to identify and work with extremely talented and imaginative new artists at Jerwood Sculpture.”
The deadline for submissions is 31st October 2008. Full application details are available to download from the link below. Alternatively artists should send a stamped addressed envelope to the organisers:
