Enquiring minds are satisfied

On May 23rd a group of enquiring minds delved deep into the history of their ancestors at Peabody Trust’s Ada Marion Centre as part Silver Surfers Day (SSD) 2008. Hooked by a fascination with family history, the new net-users received an introduction to the cyber- world by both Peabody Trust staff and an experienced genealogist.

Ada Marion Centre Manager, Andrew Slee said: "Many of the 50-plus generation who are not yet online are interested in the internet, but purely for leisure. So we asked a group of our existing learners why they would like to use the internet - and the response was to research their family tree.

''IT keeps a generation in touch with society's services, and because many day-to-day services are now online, those without training or IT access are excluded. SSD provides an opportunity to celebrate learning and engage with an age group who are under represented.''
