More number plate memories

Reading your article about number plates brought back some happy memories for me; I can personally remember my old car numbers, better then the newer ones.

My first car back in 1965 was an Austin A35 reg. no SRY 619, another old car Reg. was CEG 925. Then there was BTL 296C that one was 1965 when first registered.

I still have a few old logbooks from old cars that have been long since scrapped all are cars before 1960. All of those numbers were before the year lettering started which started back in 1963. I know it was that year because a neighbour at the time got a brand new car in that year.

One of my late father’s old car numbers was JL 4384, the first letters signified where in the country the car was first registered. How many of your readers remember when car road tax was £12.10s.0d, those were days and petrol cost 3s 6d a gallon or 17 p in today’s money.

How the cost of motoring as gone up.
