How aware are YOU of prostate cancer?

Some 10,000 men die as a result of prostate cancer in the UK every year, and a man aged 50 and above has a one in eleven chance of being diagnosed with the disease during his lifetime. Yet compared with breast cancer, prostate cancer is under funded and under researched, and there has been little improvement in the treatment or survival of men with advanced prostate cancer in the past 50 years.

The Prostate Cancer Research Centre (PCRC) is determined to improve treatment and research in this area - highlighted during this year's Prostate Cancer Awareness Week. Their mission is to improve the survival rates of men with prostate cancer, and their scientists are working to better understand how and why prostate cancer cells spread so that they can design treatment to delay or prevent this happening.

PCRC scientists are also carrying out research into stem cells to try to provide a new therapy for prostate cancer based on their belief that cancer often starts in a stem cell. But they need help with funding, as research costs £1.5 million each year - of which £550,000 needs to be raised by voluntary contributions from our supporters.

And YOU can help by signing up to their Snowdon 500 event: trek to the summit of Snowdon on 17th May 2008 in aid of the PCRC and enjoy a spectacular day out whilst helping to raise vital funds for the Centre’s pioneering research.

For more information about the event and to download a registration form go to the second link below or call the event organiser Matt Rannamets on 07769 622674.

And if you can’t make it to Snowdon on 17th May you can still sign up to a sponsored "virtual climb" of the mountain. All you have to do is walk the equivalent distance on any day of your choosing during the month of May. You could get a group of friends or work colleagues to do it with you. For more information ring Claire in the PCRC on 020 7679 9595.

For more information about treating prostate cancer, order a copy of the PCRC's free leaflet, which is a great source of information about the disease. Email info@prostate-cancer-research.org.uk or call 020 7679 9366. Alternatively visit the website linked below.
