Sort out MS fact from fiction - online with the experts

The MS Society is offering people with multiple sclerosis unrivalled access to world-renowned experts in the field of MS as part of its flagship national convention MS Life, taking place at Manchester Central next week.

On the 29 and 30 March, leading scientists will make themselves available for one to one discussions with those attending the convention – the largest event of its kind in Europe for people affected by MS – and for those who can’t attend, the experts will be answering e-mails.

Accurate information about the latest MS research is hugely important to those affected by the condition and this will be the focus of a talk by Professor Alasdair Coles, from Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge.

‘Risks, placebos and myth-busting’ will discuss the dangers of mis-information, alleged miracle cures and why people with MS should have access to the facts.

MS Society Event Director, Chris Bray, said: “People with MS are hungry for as much information as possible about the latest research and this is why wacky myths about the next ‘cure’ are so damaging.

“We want as many people as possible to have access to the authoritative information that will be on offer over the weekend of MS Life and this year we are offering unrivalled access to the leading lights in MS research.”

Professor Coles will be joined by childhood MS expert Dr Brenda Banwell, Professor George Ebers from the University of Neurology who will discuss the genetics of MS, and Professor David Bates from the University of Newcastle who will discuss future MS therapies.

A debate session chaired by Nicholas Owen, one of television’s most experienced news presenters and journalists, will take place following Saturday’s research talks and will delve further into a number of issues highlighted throughout the day.

MS is the most common disabling neurological condition in young people and MS Life aims to offer everything from the latest research and medical developments to support, information about holidays, mobility and employment.

A number of interactive fringe events will be taking place over the weekend, including Wheel & Walk, a sponsored and accessible 6km walk around Manchester City Centre, and an inclusive, accessible club night at Manchester Central where everyone is a VIP. There will also be live cookery demonstrations from some of the country’s top chefs, including Michael Caines, Shahena Ali and Mridula Baljekar.
