Some good news for adult learners
17/03/2008
Following the disastrous collapse of community education and loss of affordable classes - even the expensive ones have been lost - the GOOD news is that the government is looking at the value of leisure learning for adults.
John Denham, Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills seems to be driving it, having recognised the spin-off effects on health and wellbeing - especially for older people.
Audrey Cloet, South West Seniors' Network
Mature Times says: Indeed this is the case. John Denham is increasing spending on adult learning by some £600 million over the next three years, to £4.8 billion. He states that his Department 'continues to value informal adult learning within this significant investment. ' He also recognises that learning is more likely to happen outside a classroom setting: 'Far more adult learning is being designed and developed by learners themselves.
More people want to choose what, where, when and how they want to learn. New technologies make new ways of learning accessible, but the most radical possibilities are only just beginning to be understood.'
