New hope for stressed heroes
03/03/2008
War heroes reluctant to ask for help have been uncovered by a new charity which has been set up to offer new hope to veterans whose lives have been wrecked by Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Its become clear that saying I need mental health treatment' is a huge step for veterans, says PTSD Resolution founder and director Piers Bishop, and something you have to do to get treatment from the conventional agencies.
What has emerged from the calls to the new charity is that over half those who ask for help wont go to a conventional service unless absolutely desperate.
PTSD Resolution offers help anonymously, at discreet locations round the UK, so people who need help with their nightmares, flashbacks, mood swings or other post-traumatic symptoms can receive it without anyone else knowing what they are doing.
People do not want to define themselves as mentally ill, and will avoid in-patient treatment at almost any cost, adds Mr Bishop.
This may help to explain why it is on average 13 years before veterans ask for help with their post-traumatic symptoms. Of those successfully treated so far, one ex-serviceman said After the session I went away that night my nightmares ceased, I became much calmer and to this day have not had one flashback or re-enactment episode, I threw out my anti depressants. I have reconnected to those around me and can hold down a job.
