Southwark A-Z for older people
20/02/2008
Helping older people get more out of life is the aim of a new directory just launched in Southwark. The first A to Z Directory of Services for Older People lists everything from arts classes to meals on wheels to walking groups. It is designed to help older people access the wide range of services, events and support available to them in the borough.
Produced by Southwark Council and the PCT, with assistance from the Southwark Pensioners' Forum, the directory is a result of feedback from an extensive consultation with older people in 2006.
One of the clear messages from older people at the time was that they wanted better information so they could access services and take part in more activities in Southwark. Cllr David Noakes, executive member for adult social care, said: "I imagine there are a large number of older people in Southwark who will be surprised at the number of support agencies, activities and services that are available to them.
"This directory puts all that information at their fingertips."
Charlie Cherrill, chair of the Southwark Pensioners' Forum, said: "We welcome this A to Z directory because it provides pensioners with the information they need - in a very accessible way. Congratulations to the people involved in formulating the directory."
The directory is mainly for people aged 60 years and above but may also be useful to carers and family members of older people.
It will be available at libraries and one stop shops or by calling 020 7525 3105. The council aims to update the directory every 18 months to ensure the information remains accurate. The council's general A to Z of services in the borough is also available.
