Are older TV presenters over the hill?

I read with interest Selina Scott's views that the BBC is excluding women over the age of 50. The phasing out of such television greats as Anna Ford and Moira Stuart is a real loss for British broadcasting and serves as a stark reminder about workplace attitudes towards older workers.

While youth is increasingly perceived as a valued asset, it is soon to be in short supply, with an estimated 40% of the population reaching 50-plus by 2027. The world of work is changing and society's attitudes must change with it. Employers are facing increased competition and skill shortages, and yet only 24 per cent of businesses have strategies to retain older workers.

With good candidates increasingly in demand, no company can afford to discount the contribution of older employees. Stereotypes must be overcome and perceptions changed, and high-profile companies such as the BBC should be leading the way.
