Rare chance to meet Sir Thomas Allen at the Georgian Theatre Royal, Richmond
14/01/2008
International opera star Sir Thomas Allen is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Richmondshire Subscription Concerts with local music-lovers at the Georgian Theatre Royal Richmond on Sunday 10th February at 7.30pm.
The world-famous artist will reminisce and reflect on his extensive musical career in the opera house, as well as numerous other subjects dear to him. Open to everyone, the evening is a rare chance to hear Sir Thomas Allen speak and answer questions - rather than sing - in the intimate surroundings of the Georgian Theatre Royal.
Born in Seaham, County Durham, Sir Thomas Allen has long taken an interest in the Georgian Theatre Royal and was a patron during the time of the theatre’s refurbishment. Keen to re-visit the theatre ever since it’s re-opening in 2003, Sir Thomas has been juggling his busy performance schedules to fit in a North Yorkshire trip. Two years ago he expressed a desire to help celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Subscription Concerts and the idea of a Benefit Evening was born, with proceeds split equally between the RSC and the theatre.
Sir Thomas’s distinguished career includes thirty-five years of performances with the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, singing over forty roles, and twenty-seven years of performances at the Metropolitan Opera, New York. He has appeared with the world's great orchestras and conductors and has made numerous recordings with names such as Georg Solti, James Levine, Sir Neville Marriner, Bernard Haitink and Sir Simon Rattle. He was made a Knight Batchelor in the 1999 Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Theatre trustee and chairman of the Richmondshire Subscription Concerts Doug Waugh said, “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Sir Thomas back to this wonderful theatre and thank Sir Thomas for so enerously giving his time to help celebrate sixty years of classical concerts in Richmond”
