Discrimination in the workplace

I have applied for numerous vacancies and have seven years experience in retail, even though I would need to work a minimum of 30 hours, I find that young people are employed, even college students after 4.00 p.m.

The minimum wage is a good idea in principal, but employers pay above minimum wage at times. I have known a young man of 19 years of age earning more than myself at 50. Also vacancies in our shops are being filled by students. This does not help the older person to have an all year round job or the security of regular pay.

The only thing that could change this is if we were all paid the same and left it to the employers to pay the extra. This would help the long term unemployed people and people like myself. I have been made redundant and would like to work longer then my retirement age of 61 years and 5 months.

In Paignton there are already 12 charity shops and numerous other shops are closing down. This I believe is a knock on effect of people not earning enough – i.e. vacancies for 20 hours or less. We have not all got partners who are working. I also believe there should be a cap on how much councillors should get paid. What we pay should be based on earnings.
