Mr Brown - Council Tax and anti-Christian policies
09/01/2008
"Whilst Gordon Brown professes to be a Christian, and even quotes the Bible at his party conference, the policies of his Government are in many cases anti-Christian."
Bridget Whitaker (by email).
"The iniquity of council tax must not be allowed to die unchallenged. When will the Government recognise the iniquity of collecting tax based on an asset which does not produce income and switch to a proper income based tax system.?"
John (by email).
"I don't think that Britain could get a better 'Gordon Brown' for my generation. I am 27 and I feel the goverment needs to look more at the generation between 21-35 due to rumors and mix ups. I am black mixed race and my education has been excellent."
Nadine Williams (by email).
"I am 65 years old and served in the Royal Air Force for 29 years. My first question is what does Gordon Brown think that our servicemen and women are thinking when they are fighting for 'Queen and Country' when he allows these tear-aways and thugs to roam the streets beating up people and destroying property? Is this the life style they are fighting for?"
Raymond Thompson
"There are thousands of people in middle England who would love to have a fairer way of paying Council Tax - especially pensioners on low incomes who are even willing to go to prison over this issue. They are crying out for a tax system that relates to their income. If the method of collection was switched to collect the tax in another way it would not only be cost effective, but be a great vote winner for the party who presented it to the public."
Michael Rosa (by email).
"For most of my life (I am 72) I have voted Labour - but no more. This government is absolutely pathetic. The bulk of Labour M.Ps are stupid and without the courage of their convictions. I just don't know who I will vote for anymore as the bulk of politicians are only interested in looking after themselves."
Mr K. M. Brooks (by email).
"Gordon Brown is more of a Sheriff than a Robin. He either fails to recognise, or else does not care, that those who do their best for their families are being severely penalised by him for doing so. Citizens of this country are being firmly encouraged to save for their futures and those of their children, only to be told that because they have done so, they do not qualify for any of the state benefits to which they are just as entitled as anyone else! Brown is a sham. Clearly, the values by which he and his colleagues rule is: Save and be Penalised!"
David Alston, Kent
"There is not one political party genuinely interested in the welfare of ordinary pensioners. In 1908, the pension was 25% of the average wage. In 2007 it is 12%. On what planet do our politicians live?"
Les Coben, Chairman, Harlow and District Pensioners Action Association.
And one reader from Cardiff said: "We are depending on you" - meaning the Mature Times!
