More spin, Mr. Brown?

I was dismayed at your lead article ("Your chance to talk to Gordon Brown", October 2007)  where in my opinion you seem to be in support of this government, which if true, is at variance I believe with the views of the majority of the older generation.

Here is an (unelected) Prime Minister who has presided over a decline in educational standards, over an NHS where people are afraid to go into hospital because of appalling standards of cleanliness - despite a vast increase in funding -  and a dental system where treatment is ever more costly.

I do not understand how anyone who had a pension scheme can vote for a person who has ‘raided’ these schemes and shows such a contempt for pensioners that the latest ‘per-budget statement’ contained yet another tax (by any other name) on state pensions.

This is also the government which has discovered that they can ‘tax’ the elderly and every other home-owner by allowing local councils to increase council tax for diminishing services.

Post Offices are scheduled for closure, again affecting pensioners who will have to travel further - often on reduced public services and therefore be more at risk - to collect there entitlements.

This is the government (listening to the people!) that denies a referendum specifically promised in their last manifesto despite what appears to be an overwhelming public desire for one.

This man has increased our overall tax burden in 10 years by an estimated 50% - but where has the money gone? Who believes Brown when he says that ‘standards have improved’ – where? More spin Mr. Brown?

I have no questions to put to this man because I’m afraid I would not be able to believe the answers.
