The reluctant retiree

Like many others, I had hoped to work past the age of 65.

I have been employed as a medical secretary in the NHS for 24 years and was assured by my manager that he was quite happy for me to continue to work in his team after I reached the age of 65.   However, Human Resources had other ideas and I have been informed that I must retire on 31 January 2008.   My appeal against the decision has been rejected with no reason given for this.

During most of my time in the NHS I have worked one hour less than full time and therefore was not allowed to contribute to the pension scheme for many years.   I will therefore only be entitled to a small occupational pension.

I think that it is unfair for any employer to be able to retire employees against their will and without good reason.
