A survey on behalf of the over 50’s online community has shown that this age group is not only green-conscious but are actively working to minimise their impact on the environment. 91% frequently sort rubbish for recycling, 65% frequently re-use some household products, 41% have reduced the amount of air travel they use, 35% frequently use public transport, 36% frequently buy organic and 20% have switched to green energy providers,
Although they were keen to do their bit, most people attributed responsibility for their transformation to a resource efficient economy with industry (40%), followed by Government directives (31%).
When specifically asked about their awareness of clean air travel, 46% said they were aware of a carbon neutral airline travel scheme, and 39% said they were likely to engage in one even if it meant paying pay up to an additional 2% of the overall flight cost if necessary.
Paul Dixon, from the research team said: “Mature people are setting an example to the rest of society in terms of their green activity, with a high level of awareness of environmental issues global warming. As a growing proportion of consumers, their decisions will have a real and important effect on humanity’s prospects.”
