A different kind of 'recipe' for October
By 'Lazy Cook' Mo Smith - 04/10/2007
October is the month when I start to put the garden to bed, and amongst the massive growth of flowers and shrubs this year there is the last of the fruit and vegetables. They all need picking, and it's amazing how many delicious meals can be made simply and quickly from these last fruits of the season. Non gardeners will also enjoy these meals - 'real recipes for real cooks'.
There is a courgette which has grown up into a marrow - perfect for a quantity of Marrow and Tomato Bake.
Lettuce which has grown so tall it needed staking - these remaining leaves will make a tasty Lettuce Soup.
Tomatoes which this year never grew larger than a cherry - they will make a really tasty Cherry Tomato and Land Cress Salad.
Pears - these can be pickled in readiness to serve with cold meats at Christmas.
Damsons - add to gin to make a Christmas Liqueur
Plums - bake into a Plum Cake to serve hot for pudding, cold for cake.
Wild Strawberries - add to mixed winter salad leaves to give extra colour, texture and flavour.
Blackberries - stir into cooked apple and make a Bramble Meringue Pie
Herbs - tie into bunches and hang in the kitchen to dry.
