"I do" as the bombs dropped!
31/07/2007
I have a memory of the war years when I was 8 years old in 1940. I was a bridesmaid to my aunt who is 10 years my senior.
We arrived at the church in London's East End, dressed in our wedding finery, when, during the service, the air raid siren sounded. The service continued accompanied by the noise of our planes chasing German planes, bombs hitting their targets and people screaming. The service was cut short, except for the exchanging of rings and the announcement of "man and wife together".
We rushed from the church, pulling on our gas masks and made for home. Straight down into the shelter in the garden, in our wedding clothes, we sat there singing and eating biscuits and water, until the "all clear" sounded.
And then we went to the reception!
