A new study by Danish researchers suggests that the humble hedgerow rose-hip may provide an effective treatment for thousands of people with the auto-immune disease Rheumatoid Arthritis. This is a common form of arthritis which can develop at any age - but it most commonly starts between the ages of 40 and 60. It is three times more common in women than in men.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a painful and debilitating auto-immune disease where the body's own immune system turns on the body attacking joints, leaving them swollen and causing damage to bone and cartilage. The disease affects an estimated 400,000 people in Britain, 4,000 of them seriously. It can be influenced by genetics but many other lifestyle factors, including diet, are involved so that anyone may be affected.
Demand soared for LitoZin Joint Health, a supplement containing an active rose-hip ingredient, when earlier research by the same team showed that taking a rose-hip food supplement significantly reduced pain and joint stiffness in sufferers of osteoarthritis. The new research provides hope of relief to the more than nine million sufferers of painful arthritic conditions including rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. 
Patients in the new trial, which took place in Berlin and Denmark, took 5g rose-hip (GOPO) daily and experienced a considerable reduction in tenderness of painful joints. GOPO is the active compound found in LitoZin, which is already successfully used by osteoarthritis sufferers. LitoZin was developed from a traditional pain relief remedy - eating home-made rose hip jam – by Danish scientists who identified the active ingredient.
In a previous study, published in 2005, LitoZin was assessed to be more effective than glucosamine in providing complementary relief for osteoarthritis sufferers. LitoZin, an anti-inflammatory, works differently to glucosamine, which promotes the rebuilding of cartilage.
